What to do before a hair transplant?
It is advisable to do your research properly when you are planning a hair transplant. Here’s a checklist of what to do before a hair transplant:
- The qualifications of the doctor: Make sure he/she is a dermatologist or plastic surgeon with training in hair transplant.
- The experience of the doctor: Check for how long they have been involved in hair transplant surgery.
- Ask for before-and-after photos: Request to see before-and-after photos of previous patients who have undergone hair transplant procedures with the surgeon. This can give you an idea of their skill and the quality of their work.
- Transparent communication: They should provide you with detailed information about the procedure, including potential risks and complications. They should also answer all your questions and address any concerns you may have.

Are any blood tests needed?
Some routine blood tests are needed, including CBC, HCV, Bleeding time, clotting time, PT, APTT, Random blood sugar, HBs AG, HIV ELISA, ECG (EKG) in all leads. These are simple tests, done to make sure there are no undetected medical issues that could complicate your surgery. Show the results to a trusted Doctor, prior to the surgery. You may also scan the results and send them by email.
What other precautions should I take before surgery?
- You need to stop smoking for 2 weeks prior to the surgery to have the best result. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can affect healing and blood circulation.
- Follow pre-operative and post-operative instructions: Pay close attention to the pre-operative and post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon. Following these guidelines can help ensure a smooth and safe recovery.
- Some medications may have to be stopped before surgery. Any medications should be disclosed to your doctor. They may recommend adjusting or discontinuing specific medications before the procedure to minimize complications.
- Don’t have spicy food the night before surgery. Follow any other fasting or dietary restrictions provided by your surgeon before the surgery.
- Wash your hair with shampoo for two days before the surgery. Do not use any hair products like gels, sprays, or hair dye.
- Avoid haircuts for a few weeks before the surgery as longer hair can provide better coverage and make it easier for the surgeon to extract donor grafts.
- Inform any allergies to your doctor.
- Maintain Realistic Expectations: Understand that the results of a hair transplant take time to become visible, often over several months. Be patient and maintain realistic expectations.
- Arrange for Post-Operative Care: Plan for post-operative care, which may include a period of rest and restrictions on activities. Make sure you have someone available to assist you during your recovery.
What happens on the day of the surgery?
- The surgery will be either in the morning or afternoon. You can have breakfast or lunch before coming at your allotted time.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of the surgery.
- If you are commuting from another city, make sure you reach Bangalore early, preferably on the previous night. Travelling back on the same day is inadvisable. If you need to arrange accommodation, you can take the assistance of our staff who will help you find a suitable hotel.
- Make transport arrangements for going home after the surgery. You cannot drive, and you cannot drive pillion. You cannot travel by Bus. If needed, we can arrange a cab for you.
- Before the surgery, Dr. Venkat or Dr. Aniketh will go over the plan once more and mark your hairline. The surgery will begin only after you sign the consent form.
- You may bring an attendant to help. They can wait in the separate attendant waiting room.
The most important thing is to be calm and relaxed. This is simple surgery. Most patients sleep during surgery or enjoy television. Do not worry or be anxious.
